Autism; What is it?

Autism is a developmental disorder that can begin at birth or within the first 3 years of life. Children with Autism look like any other child. They exhibt unusally behaviors, which appear differently in each child. Some of the charateristics of Autism are:
* Lack of Eye Contact
* Unable to socialize normally
* Obsess over an object or event
* Lack of speech/language or a loss of speech/language
* Spinning of self or objects
* Lining up of objects
* Unresponsive to verbal cues; appears to be deaf
* Uninterested in being held/cuddled, lack of affection
* Appears to be over or under responsive to senory stimuli
* Developmental milestones delayed/ differences
This is just a few charateristics of Autism, that my two boys exhibted. If a child in your life show signs of 5 or more of these, I would recommend seeking out a developmental screening, which is required by law for children ages 0-3 years. To find out where you can obtain an free screening, contact your local health department.
