There are many therapy approaches to Autism. We never tried anything beyond OT, ST, and DT. One reason is the cost of some of these therapies and most insurance companies did not cover them. All of these acronyms can be a bit overwhelming. How do you know which is right for your child? Where do find someone who can provide this type of therapy? What's the cost involved? Will this help?
I have shared in yesterday's post that my son did well with just the standard OT, ST, and DT. We never got into RDI, ABA, TEACCH, or Floortime. Our local therapy center used key components from each to form their own approach to the OT, ST, and DT.
To get you started here are some sites that can provide explanations on some of these interventions.
Occupational Therapy-The Basics
Speech and Language Therapy-The Basics
Developmental Therapy
ABA Therapy
RDI therapy
Floortime
TEACCH
Neurofeedback I am not familiar with this, I have heard about it.
Sound Therapy
Hippotherapy
Social Skills Training
Once you start researching Autism, you will discover new avenues to investigate. Make a file for each subject that interests you. I highly recommend finding a support group to join. Start by contacting your local chapter of the Autism Society of America (check ASA's website to locate a local chapter). They should have the resources to locate one. You can also search at Autism Meet-up Groups. You are not alone, it helps to be in the company of other parents who are also living with Autism, some new to it and some who are "old" pros.
